Shipham Close, Nailsea

Velux loft conversion creating a light filled home office within the existing roof space.

This detached bungalow in Nailsea needed a dedicated home office that could also be used as a bedroom, while retaining as much loft storage as possible.

The client wanted to keep the existing roofline without adding a large dormer. The bungalow’s trussed roof required substantial structural alterations to create room within it, with new support allowing sections of the trusses to be removed.

The rooflights were carefully positioned to make the most of the limited headroom. A large Velux above the desk brought natural light and views towards the Somerset Hills, while a smaller window above the staircase improved light and headroom where it was needed.

Finding space for the staircase was another challenge. We designed and installed it within the limited floor plan, alongside a separate doorway into the remaining loft. This area was fully boarded to retain useful, accessible storage.

Restricted headroom influenced the structural work, room layout and position of the rooflights. These elements had to be planned together to create a usable room within the existing roof.

The finished loft gives the homeowner a separate place to work, with the flexibility to use it as a bedroom. It also retains storage space without the larger roof alteration they wanted to avoid.
